IOS 6 has been downloaded and installed in record numbers and at a rate of 122% when compared with iOS 5. These figures are amazing and we are sure that the likes of Siri for iPad, Facebook integration and Passbook have helped persuade some of those who may have had reservations. One of the apps that have probably prevented more users from upgrading their firmware is likely to be Apple's new Maps offering. Apple in providing their 3D mapping app has really underestimated people's reliability on the native Maps service and if they had of been aware of this the current backlash may have been prevented. We have spent some time looking at the new iPhone 5 and we have to say that we are very impressed with the new hardware even if the software is taking a bashing. Google's Maps app may not have been exceptional but it did a good job and despite 3D mapping and turn by turn navigation from Apple's new Maps service, we can say that many iDevice users will probably continue to use Google Maps when it comes to a reliable service. That is of course unless Apple put the effort in and create a Maps app that really does work. The YouTube app that was ditched as a native offering with iOS 6 has been significantly improved and is now even better than ever so we think that most iPhone and iPad users running iOS 6 will be holding out more hope for somethign similar in the mapping department. Apple has promised that they it will update and improve the Maps offering but we feel that they will have to do this very quickly indeed if they are to convince users that scrapping the old Google Maps was the right decision. In summary, it is safe to say that Apple are going to be pleased with the high adoption rate that iOS 6 has achieved but there is still a lot of work to be done if this launch is to be as successful as they were hoping.

We can officially tell you now that Apple has released invitations to a special media event which is going to be held at the Yerba Buena Centre for the Arts on the 12th of September. Each of the invitations sent out had the words �It�s almost here� inscribed on them. We do know that the media event will be held on September 12th, but we don�t know yet when the next iPhone will officially launch until Tim Cook reveals the key dates on September 12th. History does tell us however that it will probably be the following week. Last year everyone was adamant that we were going to see an iPhone 5 and we were left with the iPhone 4S with better hardware but still more or less the same as the iPhone 4. Techies were delighted with the dual-core processor and 64GB memory options and there was also the introduction of Siri, the voice recognition feature. This time around, the hardware leaks and general consensus suggests that the new iPhone will have a similar design as its predecessor and the upgrades are set to be as good as it gets. A quad-core chip, 4G LTE, larger screen and more RAM are just some of the anticipated improvements. The new device will also come with iOS 6 and it is likely to sell in huge numbers as the holiday season approaches. The third beta version of iOS 6 bring with it the usual array of bug fixes and stability issues found in the second beta and testing of course will be taking place by all developers to see whether anything else has cropped up in this round. The new Apple Maps app seems to be the only big new feature of iOS 6 and some developers are being quite critical of the seemingly lackluster upgrades. Many of the developers that have tested iOS 6 and played around with it are somewhat disappointed by how similar it is to iOS 5 which launched in October 2011. There is nothing wrong with iOS 5 so a lot of people are wondering why there is such a need for a significant overhaul. There are so many great tweaks offered by the jailbreak communiity and iOS has become something of a bore for many to look at. Functionality should always be the first priority and iOS has been the smoothest mobile OS since it first arrived but we do feel that iOS needs some upgrades. This of course is our personal opinion. As always with pre-release betas you do have to have a developers account to gain access to the new iOS system. It costs $99 to sign up as a developer on the iOS Dev Center and if you are interested in the construction of iOS then this really is a worthwhile investment.

Not only did they showcase some very impressive software improvement in the form of iOS 6 and OS X Mountain Lion, they updated the Mac family too. To start with, Tim Cook took to the stage and talked about some impressive App Store stats followed by Phil Schiller who spoke about Mac improvements. These improvements included updated hardware for the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro. There was even a brand new model of the MacBook Pro introduced complete with Retina Display. After talking about hardware Apple returned again to software and Craig Federighi took to the stage to give an overview of OS X Mountain Lion. It wasn�t all about Mac though, and after talking about OS X Mountain Lion Scott Forstall took to the stage to talk about iOS. It was then time to talk about iOS 6 and the various improvements that will come with it including extended Siri functionality, Facebook integration, 3D maps and more. The talk on iOS 6 ended WWDC 2012 and Apple quickly began seeding the first iOS 6 beta firmware for developers. A new version of iTunes to handle iOS 6 beta was also launched and a brand new developer preview of OS X Mountain Lion. After such a long time it looks as if the integration of Facebook into Apple�s next major iOS release will be made official at the WWDC. Apple have been making a big fuss over the new Facebook iOS apps that have landed in the App Store in recent days. If things do go as we all expect at the WWDC it will be great news for not only Facebook but for Apple too. Facebook has over 900 million registered members who are all very active on the social network and this partnership will be extremely positive for current iOS users who are looking forward to Facebook integration with the native iOS. p>Unfortunately, until we see an official announcement from either Apple or Facebook we won�t know how deeply Facebook will be integrated into iOS 6. It is likely that users will be able to share information from native apps to their Facebook Wall, but beyond this it really is difficult to predict. iOS 6 is going to see some design changes surrounding the iTunes and iBooks Stores and this is according to 9to5Mac. It really is hard to know what we can expect especially considering the fact that we know Apple acquired Chomp which means that we would see users being able to interact better with the App Store. Normally at this time of the year we are bombarded with rumors and plenty of pictures of leaked parts and components that are said to be part of the next generation iPhone. People seem to accept now that he WWDC will have an announcement about iOS 6 and Apple�s expected 3D maps application. We could also see some hardware related announcements if rumors are to be believed. A few of the latest reports have shown images of leaked parts that are believed to be from the much anticipated iPhone 5 and if these rumors are correct this sixth generation iPhone could be longer than its predecessors. This latest rumor comes courtesy of the people over at Japanese blog Macotakara and they are showing pictures of what could possibly be a front glass panel for the iPhone 5. Without knowing where the components have come from, it is almost impossible to determine whether or not it is genuine. Macotakara are also reporting that the home button on the front screen component is slightly smaller than the one found on the iPhone 4S. Regardless of whether or not this is an official iPhone 5 part, it definitely does seem to indicate that a larger display is a possibility on the next generation iphone. It is hard to know, whether any announcement about the iPhone 5 will be made during WWDC or whether Apple will focus solely on software related announcements. I guess the only thing that we can really do is wait and see.
